I have been going through a very rough few weeks trying to sort out problems existing in my relationship with M. We have had a hard go of things for the last 2 years and we really stuck it out, but it has also put a distance and strain on us that we have had difficulty escaping from.

Last Saturday, M and I decided that it would be best if we ended the romantic part of our relationship and move forward as friends. To put it more clearly: we broke up.

We were engaged to be married (via domestic partnership) and while that makes the breakup a little more heart-breaking, we do feel it is for the best, in the end.

As you can imagine, this has disrupted the momentum and perceived future of my life, so I have been away from things more than usual with my writing -- but I very much am still 'here', though it may take a while for me to get back into a more regular swing.

I guess that's about all I need to say at the moment.

At some point here, I'm hoping to take a nice deep breath before a long vacation, because I am in dire need of one.

Stress at home and on the work front, have worn me down quite a bit, that I feel I may crack if something doesn't give soon. We've been struggling for 2 years now with finances and though it feels like the end is in sight, it is dragging way the fuck on. Just once I want to wake up completely excited about the day and my life. No worries about work, money, my head, and so on.

I'm having he hardest time writing lately. Oh, I'm writing all right, but I can never seem to finish them. I have 3 articles backed-up. They are long and take forever to edit. Part of the problem is that I have been much busier the last 2 weeks and only have a 2 hour window in which to really catch up on all my UFO stuff, not to mention write.

We are having a St, Patty's get-together on Saturday. I have had a bash every year except the last 2. Things had just been so bad with money and health, it felt as if most of the joy in life was sucked right the fuck out of me, so I caved in.

This year I'm indulging -- because it's time.

Typography and Texture

I have been working on a new piece of typography - for no particular reason (but to create). It is still unfinished as I still need to adjust kerning and word spacing. But recently, I had wanted a new desktop background image for my laptop that reflected typography and design -- and so I was eager to make one for myself.

I took the unfinished typographical piece and created this textured background. Once the actual type is completed, I'll update the image to reflect the finalized version.

Finally finished a logo & website that was a year in the waiting. I was first approached last April about beginning a website for a campaign organization here, in Oregon. Because the board members are involved in other organizations, getting everyone on the same page took some time, but finally, in early January, they were ready to begin and had a new point-of-contact that could answer my questions quickly, as well as get me the materials I needed.

I'm very happy that I was able to complete it for them on the tight schedule they required, with a launch date of February 1st -- and thrilled they love the new design!

Now on to the next round of projects!

Some people may be surprised to discover that I love Loretta Lynn. She is an inspiration in my life, and one of the early pioneers of women in Rock and Country.

I used to say that I hated Country - and I did - but only what most people think of as Country, when they hear the term.

Country music was hugely influential in the development in Rock and Roll, right alongside Blues. While they began to separate by the late 50s, Country still went on to produce real music with an edge, an era that began to die in the late 60s and especially in the 70s. This is when Country got it's bad rap. While I do credit some music from that era, the style of music was not to my taste. "Outlaw Country" was the last of it to really expose its guts before the industry became homogenized.

Then in the late 80s and 90s there would be those who wanted to resurrect the real heart of the music, artists like Dwight Yoakam come to mind. Interesting note: Dwight used to play alongside punk bands in LA. If Country had a punk era outside of Johnny Cash, it was Dwight.

My foray into Country was an unexpected one. Having grown up without it, I started off obsessing over New Wave. Then at the end of the 80s it was almost all Punk all the time, with little doses of Sisters of Mercy (my favorite band) and The The.

In the 90s I had started my own punk band, which suffered a short life. Eventually I would begin to write Industrial music, something that stuck with me until the early 00s.

My introduction into Country would come from two unlikely sources - Sisters of Mercy and The The. The Sisters had covered Dolly Parton's "Jolene" in the early 80s. A brilliant re-imagining of the heart-retching song. Later, Matt Johnson of The The put out an album of Hank Williams (Sr.) covers (much to every one's surprise). It was through these works that I began to really explore Johnny Cash and Hank Sr.

Throughout the 80s & 90s, I had a secret love of Rockabilly, which is basically early Country, or early Country and Rock mixed. I also had a thing for Western Swing. While I was at least familiar with the style of music my whole life, it wasn't until I moved to Minneapolis, MN and became involved in it's Rockabilly "scene", that everything would start to stake shape. During this period, I would create my own brand of music - outside of my Industrial work. It is a blend of Rockabilly, Western, early Country, Americana, and Irish Folk. There is also a significant note of Sisters of Mercy and The Damned added in for good measure.

For a long time this was something I played and recorded on the side -- but as I got into my 30s, it seemed the best music to echo what was in my heart. And while I have a diverse listening ear now, I certainly am the sum f all my parts, and all of me tends to reflect that.

Podcast Experience

I was just on a podcast as part of a round-table. I was so nervous! And shaky in the beginning. Lula can probably gather how I feel since she also has phone anxiety. I was on Skype, but same deal.

There was some mix-up with the start time, so a couple of us came in about a 30 minutes into the program.

There was a lot of talking and so you really cant cover everything within 2 hours having 6 separate opinions. I was quiet for a good portion of it. I guess it never occurred to me that I might be asked about my own experiences, so I kind of like - froze. I eased up later on into it though, and then had a private 2 hour gab between the hosts and myself. That was my favorite part because it felt more like 3 friends just talking. Way more relaxed and so I was a lot more vocal.

Now I'm just trying to relax after all of that pent up anxiety.

My business has been picking up. For those of you who read this (I think there's like maybe 5 of you) I am a Graphic Designer. A lot of my stuff has been with web design lately, but I hope to have the opportunity to work more with typography and logo design in the near future.

My last client had so much praise for me, I was more than a little taken back by her enthusiasm! She has also been promoting me through word of mouth to all of her colleagues and friends - something that I am wholly grateful for and deeply touched by.

I have applied for two graphic design jobs. As much as I love freelance, right now, mama needs to pay the bills! but more than that, I miss connecting with the outside world. I am slightly agoraphobic -- I say slightly because I have never been officially diagnosed, but its one of those things you can sort of figure out yourself when all of the signs point to it. I am capable of fighting it, and I wish to fight it more these days -- so getting out of the house and interacting with people is necessary. Anyway, I would appreciate any good thoughts regarding the job applications that you all can send!

I have a mini-online logo presentation tomorrow and I have to get back to prepping the files for that and such. Wish me luck!

I finally got my copy of David Airey's new book Logo Design Love, after pre-ordering it a little over a month ago. It is, of course, beautiful to look at on the outside - and within, there is a plethora of valuable information not only for logo and brand designers, but all graphic designers.

I sat down to read it at about 3pm this afternoon and by 5 I had finished 3/4 of it, marking especially useful pages along the way.

Small Victory

I hit 1000 unique visitors today at IHW! Small feat, but I'm happy nonetheless. I never expected it would even attract that many, lol.

Magz and I decided to go on a Christmas Eve drive tonight, to look at the decorated homes around town. She asked if we could go by our park -- a place we frequented at the beginning of our relationship, 3 years ago. It wad cold and she seemed out of breath (she has been slightly ill with a head cold). She told me to stop for a minute and that I should on the bench. It had frost all over it, so I said I'd rather not, then turned back around to face her...

... and there was my Maggie, down on one knee with a ring in her hand while she asked: "Deirdre Kathleen, will you marry me?"

I almost could not comprehend what was happening. It took me a moment to make sure it was real, as silly as that sounds. But when I saw the look in her eye, I knew, and burst into a million little tears, saying: "Of course I will!!"

This has been a particularly long week.

Maggie is visiting family in Minneapolis for the weekend (she left on Thursday) and I have the house to myself -- well, aside from the two rather large dogs who follow me around the house ceaselessly. And the cats. And the rats. And Mighty, our piggie.

Tomorrow, my friend Wendi turns 40 and I'm stopping by her party at the LGBT Center. Then after, I'm heading back home for an evening of flicks with my friend Kina. This requires me to do a fair amount of cleaning tomorrow, but I can usually whip the house into shape in a miraculous 60 minutes.

Now I'm going to go be a sap and watch Sleepless in Seattle, which I never finished last night.

The Art of Socializing

I had veggie sushi with my friend Stacy this evening. We are both pretty busy and don't see each other a whole lot, but she is one of my closest friends and I am always in a great mood after we hang out.

This friday I am heading over to another friend's house - a woman I mentioned not too long ago, and my friend-crush on her. Then on the 19th we are going to a Johnny Cash tribute show at a local club here in Portland.

This is all very good because I am sort of a recovering agoraphobe, and I've been trying to fight this head on lately - more than I have before. I just have to keep moving forward because if I slip up, I'll have to start all over again.

And yeah, I still need to get those Christmas decoration photos up.

An Uneventful Week (Aside from Decorating)

Well, there isn't shit happening in the news regarding UFOs, aside from more McKinnon stuff and that whole MOD thing. I think I had something like 187 Google Alerts just about MOD shutting down it's UFO investigation branch.

It may have been more like 30, but it sure seemed like 187.

We decorated the house yesterday - pictures forthcoming.

I'm going to go put on my nighty and watch a DVD about UFOs I picked up yesterday. Hopefully it is interesting, though I doubt there is anything that I haven't heard before. In any case, I have wine and cigarettes, so I should do all right, regardless of the disc's content.

Wine and Welaxation

It was Maggie's birthday today. I got her an hour massage and hot-tub thingy at this nice place in town called Common Ground. She really enjoyed it. I also got her a Stephen King book that has a character in it that she likes from Insomnia.

I'm taking her to dinner at an Ethiopian place on Sunday after visiting a friends art gallery.

Beyond that, more code today. I've about had it with IE 6 & 7 compliance. Especially 6. Luckily my friend doesn't care if IE 6 isn't supported because it's like a decade old. I have no idea why so many people still support the damn thing. Let it go.

Anyway, I designed and am currently in the process of building her portfolio website. I'm excited about putting it my portfolio. Almost done, just have to work out 1 validation issue and then move the site over to the root directory and check links and nav.

I was nervous to see how it would turn out, but I absolutely love it! I sent him about 6 pictures but he used one in particular for most of it.

Old Romance

Yesterday, which one of my Exes often referred to as European Expansionism Day, we watched An Affair to Remember.

Surprisingly, I had never seen this movie before. I always meant to, and knew the back-story, right down to twist 3/4 in, but for some reason or another, never got around to viewing this gem.

I have always liked Cary Grant. He was never my favorite "leading-man" of the era - that one goes to Humphrey Bogart (and on occasion, Erol Flynn), but I do like him quite a bit. Grant often fits a very specific type of character that only he could play, and so it was with An Affair to Remember.

Starring alongside Grant was the lovely Deborah Kerr. The kind of arms-length attraction and courting they adhered to really worked well, and had all of the right build-up.

True to most romance films, I bawled like a baby at the end - usually the sign of a beautiful film.

Indeed, it was beautiful.

Dinner

Dinner was a success - and I managed to time everything perfectly with one stove, 4 burners and a toaster oven.

And, I've already cleaned up and baked a frozen apple pie which is now on the stove.

I'm too full for that - though I didn't over eat for once. I just didn't feel like being miserable in my tummy all night.

Temporal Anomaly I - The Holidays

While I am well aware of the approach of Thanksgiving this week, Maggie said something to me that took a moment to process. She was all excited about the day after Thanksgiving - because apparently, we are decorating for Christmas.

Christmas? When the Hell did Christmas get so close!?

I really need to get a better grip on time.

At any rate, here are my movie plans for the oncoming Holidays:

I think I may skip A Christmas Story this year. That leaves me at about 3 films, which isn't a whole lot. My reasoning there is that I have to sit through God knows how many Muppet Christmas movies at Maggie's request (and by request I mean command), so I'm not sure when to fit my movies in.

If I have time I may watch the 1940s version of A Christmas Carol or the version with Patrick Stewart (*swoon*) as Scrooge.

2500 Miles

My aunt just informed me that her oven is broke and she has a turkey and a ham that she cannot cook for later this week. It breaks my heart. This is one of the problems that comes with being 2500 miles away from Chicago.

She lost her job a while ago, so I suggested trying Craigslist for someone to look at and repair it for cheap or to check the dyke community, since the one in Portland here seems to have a ton of butches in every imaginable field.

Lastly I forwarded her some links on how to cook a whole turkey on a grill, so if she has a standard sized one, she should be able to pull it off.

I wish I had the dough to fly her and her girlfriend out here -- or at least be able to buy her a convection oven or something. Damn you Economy! *shakes fist*

Personally, I have issues with the holiday of Thanksgiving as it is typically recognized. I instead invent my own holiday that happens to fall on the same day (since most people get the day off). I should give it a name.

I had an amazing time this evening with a not-so-new friend. We knew each other, got along, and seemed to like each other, but never had any intense conversation until recently when we realized our lives have almost mirrored each other. It's like having a conversation with myself, but with a slightly different perspective.

I'm still in that friend-gushing zone. It almost was like a date, in a way. I mean, it wasn't a date but it had that similar sort of excitement attached to it.

I also bounced some questions off of her in regards to the direction I feel my life is being pulled in. How far down the rabbit hole do I want to go? She told me to jump in... all the way. I don't take advice from most people about the paths I choose in life, but something told me to put stock in hers.

I turned 35 this year. In late September, actually. I don't feel 35... but that's probably because I feel 800. I'm not sad though. I mean, I'm sad about some things, but not so much the number. It is more a sadness that is associated with personal expectations - where I'd be at 35 and all of that.

But 35 has me in some interesting situations, so it has it's good points (so far).

It's hard to remember to be thankful for what you have.

Somewhere along the way, I lost an hour. Not sure how. It was 9 one moment, then a few minutes later it was 10. This upsets me. I instinctively checked my body for signs of medical experimentation, but aside from a few moles and cat scratches, I'm clean.
